3 Hidden Gems at Sunway Square Every Student Needs to Know (And The Steakhouse to Eat After)

Sunway Square Mall opened in December 2025 and most people walking through it are still figuring out what's actually inside. If you're a student at Sunway University, Monash University and Taylor's University — or just someone who spends time in the Bandar Sunway area — you're sitting on one of the most interesting mixed-use developments in Klang Valley right now.
Most people know about TGV and Village Grocer. But there are three spots inside Sunway Square that the student crowd hasn't fully discovered yet. Here's your guide.
1. BUMP Bouldering — The Climbing Gym That Makes the Gym Feel Boring
BUMP Bouldering has quietly become one of the most popular fitness communities in KL, and their Sunway Square outlet brings that energy right to your doorstep.
If you've never tried bouldering, the concept is simple: no ropes, no harness — just you, the wall, and a series of colour-coded routes (called "problems") that get harder as you progress. It's part puzzle, part full-body workout, and completely addictive.
Why students love it:
You don't need to book a class or commit to a schedule — walk in, pay a day pass, and climb
It's social by nature. You'll naturally end up trying the same routes as the people next to you, trading tips and attempting routes together
The difficulty range is huge — absolute beginners and seasoned climbers share the same floor
Monthly memberships give you access to all BUMP outlets across Klang Valley
The honest reality: your forearms will be completely dead after your first session. Budget 1.5 to 2 hours if it's your first time.
And once you're done — you're going to be hungry. Very hungry. We'll come back to that.
2. The Library by BookXcess — Southeast Asia's Largest 24-Hour Bookstore
This one deserves more attention than it's getting.
The Library by BookXcess at Sunway Square is not just another bookstore. It's a 24-hour space — meaning you can walk in at 2am during finals week and find a corner to read, work, or decompress. That alone makes it unlike anything else in the Klang Valley.
The BookXcess concept is already well-loved across Malaysia for its deeply discounted books — you'll regularly find titles at 50–80% off retail. But the Sunway Square version takes it further with a full café (Kenny Hills Bakers is inside), a genuine library atmosphere, and the kind of curated selection that makes it easy to spend an hour just browsing.
What makes this one different from other BookXcess outlets:
Open 24 hours — genuinely useful during exam periods
Kenny Hills Bakers inside means good coffee and pastries at any hour
The interior design was conceived around the upcoming Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre next door — so it has an arts-and-ideas energy that the average mall bookstore doesn't
Largest BookXcess in Southeast Asia by floor space
Whether you're killing time between lectures, looking for your next read, or just need somewhere quiet that isn't your room — this is it.
3. Armoury Steakhouse — Where You Go After the Climb
Here's the thing about bouldering: it destroys your body in the best possible way, and then it leaves you ravenous.
A plate of economy rice is not going to cut it after two hours on the wall. Your muscles need real protein. And there's exactly one place in Sunway Square built for that moment.
Armoury Steakhouse is a premium casual steakhouse that's been running in Singapore for over a decade — and their Sunway Square outlet is the first in Malaysia. The menu is built around one idea: serious beef at prices that make sense.
What to order:
The entry point is the Australia Black Angus Manhattan Striploin (170g) at RM84 — a thick-cut striploin with a proper crust, served as a solo meal. It's the most accessible way to experience the Armoury sear without committing to a Big Cut, and at RM84 it's genuinely good value for what you're getting.
If you're going with a group after a climbing session, this is where the Big Cut comes in. The
MB2+ Australia Black Angus Ribeye 500g at RM300 is designed for 2–3 people sharing — a format borrowed from their Singapore success that makes premium beef a communal experience rather than an individual expense. Split three ways, that's RM100 a head for an A5-grade searing protocol applied to a 500g ribeye. Hard to beat.
For the full experience — the reason Armoury built their name in Singapore — the A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Ribeye 500g at RM750 is the one. The same 225°C Armoury Crust technique applied to top-grade Japanese Wagyu. A celebration cut.
Weekday lunch sets start from RM25 if you're dropping by between lectures — soup, main, dessert, and a drink, with steak options available.
The space: no dress code, no pretension. It's built for the kind of dinner that lasts two hours because nobody wants to leave. Good for post-climb groups, study breaks that turn into dinner, or anyone who just needs a proper meal.
The Full Student Day at Sunway Square
If you want to make a day of it:
Morning / Early Afternoon → Drop into The Library by BookXcess. Browse, pick up a book, grab a coffee from Kenny Hills Bakers. It's an easy two hours.
Afternoon → Head to BUMP Bouldering. Get your climbing session in. Expect your forearms to fail you around the 90-minute mark. That's normal.
Evening → Walk straight to Armoury Steakhouse. Order the Manhattan or split a Big Cut with whoever survived the session. You've earned it.
Everything is inside the same development — BUMP, BookXcess, and Armoury are all within Sunway Square Mall. No Grab required.
